Dropstones
Set on Fogo Island off the coast of Newfoundland, _Dropstones_ is an intimate family portrait that follows matriarch Sonya shortly after she has returned to the home she once yearned to escape. As Sonya raises her two young sons, Luke and Sean, she finds herself drawing on her island’s traditions to meet the challenges of motherhood. Set against the changing seasons over the course of a year, the film immerses us in the unique rhythms of life on Fogo Island, illuminating both the hardships and fulfillment that come with calling this singular place home.

Filmmaker Caitlin Durlak delivers a poetic and observational work set against the idyllic and picturesque backdrop of Fogo Island. Taking back control of her life after a complicated marriage, Sonya returns to her native island with her two children. As the head of the family, Sonya is firm, but overflowing with warmth – and she is determined to shape her sons’ characters so they will become good men. Once desperate to leave this small fishing village, she finds that, years later, it has become a haven of peace. The camera captures the changing seasons and the intimate beauty of family moments, evoking both freedom and a powerful sense of community and belonging.
