WHAT IS TËNK?

Tënk is North America's first editorialized online subscription platform dedicated exclusively to auteur documentaries. The platform was founded in 2020 as a direct response to the lack of distribution efforts and channels dedicated to auteur documentary cinema. Tënk operates not only as a streaming platform dedicated to championing and highlighting exceptional documentary cinema both emerging and established but also as a distribution hub that ensures each film is promoted equally and passionately and is accompanied throughout the whole process from inception all the way to finding its audience.

At Tënk we believe in the power and intellectual richness of the documentary genre and its role as a vehicle for social change. This is manifested through our unique curatorial model which often highlights films that are in direct dialogue with and respond to current issues both locally, nationally and internationally. In a sea of fabricated and biased news reporting, algorithms and online censorship, documentary cinema offers a preliminary overview of the complex issues affecting our world.

WHAT MAKES TËNK STAND OUT?

COLLABORATION AND EXCHANGE

Tënk boasts a wide net of partners around the globe including international and Canadian film festivals, artist centers, distribution centers, contemporary art and film publications and journals etc. Through these partnerships, Tënk is able to showcase special programming that includes new festival releases, recent restorations and rare works previously unavailable online. These one-off programs allow us to dive deep into various thematics and topics and offer our audiences a rare glimpse into different cinematic universes.

INDEPENDENCE

The fact we are an online platform grants us a great amount of freedom in terms of programming and curation and Tënk instrumentalizes this by showing an eclectic selection of films. Our curatorial model favors quality over quantity, we show landmark films from the 50s as well as recent festival releases, a 3-hour documentary or a 4-minute experimental short. All works are presented with equal passion and attention to detail.

ACCESSIBILITY AND LINGUISTIC DIVERSITY

Our entire programming and website is 100% bilingual, with films subtitled in French and English (sometimes by our very own team members) and accompanying texts in both languages as well.

FRESH AND UNIQUE CONTENT

Each week 5 hand-picked new titles are introduced into the platform and remain available for streaming for the next two months.

EDITORIALIZATION

As an editorialized platform, Tënk’s mission is to accompany the audience through their discovery. We offer passionate texts penned by our film programmers, curators, and collaborators that situate each film within its particular unique context and offer a door into the filmmaker’s world and methodology. These texts operate as critical maps and illuminations of the worlds of contemporary and classic documentary films and thus favor the discovery of lesser-known gems.
