Louisa

Poster image Louisa

Louisa lives with total deafness. Raised orally, she was always asked to do what everyone else did. At the age of 23, Louisa began studying German sign language and learned to manage on her own. Great questions crossed her mind, leading her to assert herself and become more emancipated.

Louisa studies at the Hamburg University, loves music and is outspoken and eloquent. But at 23, she has to face the fact, that she will never hear. Little by little, she decides to dive into the new world in front of her. The Deaf community welcomes her with open arms, she learns sign language, decides against a hearing implant and moves out from home. This coming-of-age documentary — shot on 16-mm film — accompanies a strong woman in an important time of her life. The film plays with montage, music and sound to help the audience feel what it could mean to hear nothing. An absolute empowering view on a young woman who insists that not just her, but the world must change too.
