The Lord's Day

This elegantly simple film follows Simon Weizineau and two of his friends during a day like any other—well, no, not quite. The Lord’s Day, the day of rest, the one day of freedom you can count on… and how to spend it? The Lord’s Day is a short fable of the everyday tinged with ennui or simply a feeling of waiting, meditatively waiting, perhaps, with a hint of grief—a portrait of teenage years, of leaving for adventure, for self-discovery—and where do we want to fit into the educational system, anyway? A film that tours us, abruptly, with little filter aside from technical choices, into the community of Wemotaci as seen through the eyes of these three young people.

This short was created with support from Étienne Lacelle, an emerging filmmaker and filmmaker-mentor at Wapikoni Mobile, in the Atikamekw community of Wemotaci, where the organization was born during the filming of a feature from Manon Barbeau in collaboration with young people from the community. Its mission is now to support the development of artistic projects, confidence and empowerment in youth from Indigenous communities.
