Born in Russia in 1993, Adèle Shaykhulova immigrated to France at 12 years old. She completed a master’s degree in filmmaking at the University of Paris 8, where she made Adieu Athènes, her graduation film. She then directed Without you, without me (2020), a documentary made with a cell phone and archival footage. The film was selected at Visions du Réel where it received the Tënk Prize. Since September 2020, Adèle has been studying filmmaking at the Fémis and is also preparing a short documentary film, Être là.
As a small girl, Adèle Shaykhulova had to leave Russia for France, leaving the rest of her family behind. To make up for this absence, she secretly films their conversations. But when she learns that her cousin Sonia, with whom she grew up, has cancer, film becomes perhaps the only way to bridge an immeasurable distance.
