Alex Evstigneev was born and raised in Shatura, Russia. He studied documentary filmmaking at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK). His student film The Track premiered at Dok Leipzig in 2019. His next documentary, The Golden Buttons, was launched at Visions du Réel in 2020. In 2021, Alex Evstigneev directed the animated documentary short Mom's Hair.
