Filmmaker, journalist, and jack-of-all-trades, Alexis de Gheldere is passionate about wide spaces and encounters. After a few years of traveling through many countries and writing travel guides, he embarked on a trip to West Africa where he made documentaries for television. He then worked with training teams for programs aimed at street kids (Télé Sans Frontières) and Indigenous people (Wapikoni Mobile) to teach them how to make short documentaries. His first feature documentary, Seeking the Current (2010), co-directed with Nicolas Boisclair, was selected for several festivals around the world. Since then, Alexis de Gheldere has continued to practice filmmaking and journalism by participating in film projects and television series. In 2020, he was a script advisor on the documentary Demystifying Cannabis, in addition to working on his first novel, Venir au monde, published by Leméac. In 2021-2022, he worked on the sequel to the documentary Seeking the Current, scheduled for release in 2023.
Nicolas Boisclair and Alexis de Gheldere collaborate with Quebecois film star Roy Dupuis on this documentary about environmental advocacy. The film is a critique of Hydro-Quebec's Romaine River initiative, a plan to construct four dams along the 500-kilometer waterway. It's also a story of devolution from social democratic ideals to greed and environmental destructiveness.
