Andrei Ujică was born in 1951 in Timisoara, Romania. After immigrating to Germany in 1981, he became a teacher of literature and film theory at the University of Mannheim. It was not until 1989 that he decided to devote himself to film. In 1992, he worked with Harun Farocki on Videograms of a Revolution, a film about the relationship between political power and the media. He then directed Out of the Present, which recounts the journey of cosmonaut Sergei Krikalyov aboard the space station Mir while on Earth, the Soviet Union was collapsing. In 2010, Andrei Ujică closes his trilogy on the end of communism with The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu, presented at Cannes and acclaimed by international critics. At the invitation of the Fondation Cartier, Ujică directed the short film 2 Pasolini in 2021, which revisits Pasolini's trip to Palestine in the 1960s.
