Gentille M. Assih is a Togolese filmmaker, born in 1979 in Lomé. Passionate about cinema from an early age, she trained as a graphic design technician and cinematographer in 2001. In 2006, she studied creative documentary writing and directing with Africadoc in Saint-Louis, Senegal. At the same time, she pursued a BTS (advanced technical diploma) in communication at the African Institute of Commercial Studies and later earned a degree in Human Resources Management. In 2009, she directed Itchombi, her first documentary. That same year, she produced and directed the fiction short film Bedenam, the hope of a village, with support from the Goethe-Institut in Johannesburg. In 2010, she filmed her sister’s initiation ritual, resulting in the documentary Akpéma. Her 2012 film Le rite, la folle et moi unveils a family secret that has evolved into a true-life folktale over time. She later gained further recognition with Into the Light in 2020.
