Gianluca Matarrese was born in Turin, Italy, in 1980. He moved to Paris in 2002 to study cinema and theatre. In 2008, he began working for French television as a scriptwriter and director on comedy series until 2012. He then worked as a scriptwriter, reporter and producer for several French television channels. He also works as an actor in French cinema and theatre. Between 2013 and 2014, he directed two short fiction films. In 2019, his documentary Fuori Tutto won the prize for best Italian documentary at the Turin Film Festival. His next documentary, The Last Chapter, had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Critics' Week and won the Queer Lion. His film Fashion Babylon premiered at CPH:DOX and was included in the official selection of Hot Docs 2022. His video installations have been shown at the Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt and the Galerie Mannerheim in Paris. He is also involved in film-related teaching and educational activities in schools and universities.
