Gianni Celati is one of Italy’s leading contemporary novelists. His work has been translated all over the world. Born in Sondrio in 1937, he studied in Bologna, specialising in English and American literature. He was a student of Italo Calvino, who personally introduced him to the world of literature, and he translates major writers including Melville, Conrad, Jack London, Céline and Barthes, as well as writing philosophical and critical essays. He is a stage and film director (The World of Luigi Ghirri (1999), about the famous post-war photographer). Rebecca West’s book about his life’s work, Gianni Celati, The Craft of Everyday Storytelling, was published by University of Toronto Press.
