After studying law, cinema and musicology at the University of Montreal, Guylaine Maroist became a freelance journalist at Le Devoir in the early 90s. In 2002, she founded La Ruelle Films to produce auteur documentaries with producer/director Eric Ruel. The tandem produced numerous films: Chanter plus fort que la mer (2003), Bombes à retardement (2007), Gentilly or Not To Be (2012), God Save Justin Trudeau (2015) and Expo 67 Mission impossible (2017). In 2015, she was made a member of the non-governmental organization Pugwash which has been influencing the United Nations and heads of state since 1957 on matters of peace and nuclear disarmament. In 2020, she released with Eric Ruel the documentary _Jukebox: An American Dream Made in Quebec. _In 2021-2022, Guylaine Maroist was a visiting professor at UQAM's École des médias. Backlash: Misogyny in the Digital Age, co-directed with Léa Clermont-Dion, is her most recent documentary project.
