Jacques Leduc is a film director and cameraman born in Montreal in 1941. While being a writer for the magazine Objectif (1961-67), Leduc joined the National Film Board. He worked as a cameraman until 1967 when he began directing both fictional and documentary work alike. His first major film, We Are Far from the Sun (1970) was based on the life of Brother André and established Leduc's style: use of a complex structure, de-dramatization, and a distorted sensitivity. He did it again with Ordinary Tenderness (1973) that goes even further in search of the everyday. Albedo (1982) was part of an approach that renewed the conventions of direct cinema. His aesthetic is materialized in a body of work where reality and fiction are intertwined. In his subsequent films, Leduc reflects on the documentary form, Quebec society, political activism, and the role of women.
