Jacques-Yves Cousteau, born June 11 1910 in Saint-André-de-Cubzac, France, and died June 25 1997 in Paris, was a French naval officer and oceanographic explorer. With his crew and his famous ship, the Calypso, Captain Cousteau criss-crossed the seas and great rivers of the world for forty years, providing images that have raised public awareness of the ecological cause. His film The Silent World, co-directed with Louis Malle, won the Palme d'Or in 1956 and the Oscar for Best Documentary in 1957.
