Jan Vromman is a Belgian filmmaker and artist born in 1958. He primarily directs documentaries whose subjects require research, a point of view, and a sense of history, as evidenced by The Art of Tree Cutting (1993), The little man from Binche (1992), As Long as Shipbuilders Keep Singing (1999), and The History of the Pig (Within Us) (2017). His creations fluctuate between fiction and documentary. Driven by curiosity, Vromman has also ventured into theater and has undertaken socio-artistic projects, installations, and even fiction. While commitment and emotion are important to him, they must always go hand in hand with a sense of analysis and understanding. He also writes literary short stories. Currently, he is a documentary professor at the Flemish Film School in Brussels.
The History of the Pig (Within Us)
Duration: 4h06Pigs have had a close connection to humans since prehistoric times. Over the centuries, stories, rules and legends have given the animal a profound meaning. It is a symbol of uncleanness, for the "beast" hidden inside of us, a source of food, a bone of contention in discussions. This animal signifies both passion and rejection. And that says a lot about mankind.
