Jean Louis Schefer (1938 - 2022) was a French writer, philosopher, art critic, and theorist of cinema and image. Graduating from the École des hautes études en sciences sociales under the guidance of Roland Barthes and Algirdas Julien Greimas, he initially worked in Italy on the creation of a dictionary. Later, in the 1970s, he taught in Paris, while also contributing to publications such as Tel Quel, Critique, and the Cahiers du cinéma. Over the course of his career, he published more than twenty works.
