Maurice Bulbulian was born in 1938. He played a key role in the development of the direct-cinema social documentary genre in Quebec. His first six documentaries were made for the Challenge for Change programme, and he is known for involving his subjects directly in the creative process, particularly on Little Burgundy (1969) – co-directed with Bonnie Sherr Klein – which remains an important work in the cinema of social action. With In Our Forests (1971), Richesse des autres (1973), Ameshkuatan - Les sorties du castor (1978), Our Land, Our Truth (1982) and The Nitinaht Chronicles (1997), Bulbulian has depicted many diverse people, from Quebec to Latin America, trying to retain or gain control of their lives.
