Born in Tel Aviv in 1945, Nurith Aviv began her career as a press photographer for the Israeli Army before gradually turning to video and film shoots. In 1975, she was recognised by the CNC (France’s National Centre for Cinema and the Moving Image) as a Director of Photography, the first woman in France to ever practise this profession. She has worked for Amos Gitaï, René Allio, Jacques Doillon and Agnès Varda. In 1989, Aviv began directing. From Kafr Qar'a, Israël (1989) to Perte (2002), she has filmed all over Europe. In 2004, she began to devote herself to a topic that fascinates her – Hebrew. From this reflection sprang a trilogy opening with D'une langue à l'autre, continuing with Langue sacrée, langue parlée (2008) and concluding with Traduire (2010). In 2013, she made Annonces, followed by Poétique du cerveau in 2015. Signing (2018) and Yiddish (2020) continue her exploration of language.
