Patricio Guzmán is one of the best internationally known Chilean filmmakers. He was born in Santiago in 1941. From 1966 to 1969, he studied at Madrid’s official film school. In the 1970s, he focused on Salvador Allende’s government, producing and directing The Battle of Chile, a documentary trilogy. These films made nine months after the military coup d’état, won him several major awards and formed the basis of his filmmaking. After Pinochet’s coup d’état on September 11th, 1973, he was threatened with execution and went into hiding in Chile’s capital. He now lives in France but remains very attached to his homeland. He has made several documentaries about Chile in the 20th century, including Le Cas Pinochet (2001), Salvador Allende (2004), Nostalgia for the Light (2010) and The Pearl Button (2015), which won him the Silver Bear for best screenplay at the Berlinale in 2015. He also founded Santiago’s documentary film festival, Santiago Fidocs.
