Born in Toronto in 1958 to Swiss parents, Peter Mettler studied film at the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, and became a leading figure in Ontario’s New Wave in the 1980s, making his first, highly acclaimed experimental feature Scissere in 1982. The filmmaker’s hybrid body of work explores the limits of human perception without a pre-established script, following an associative process that wanders along the borders of art house, documentary and fiction. Among other things, we owe him a trilogy of metaphysical documentaries made up of Picture of Light (1994), Gambling, Gods and LSD (2002) and The End of Time (2012).

Wide-eyed and frightened, the central figure, Brun...
