Sophie Deraspe is a Québécois director, cinematographer, screenwriter, and producer born in Rivière-du-Loup in 1973. Her journey into cinema was inspired by visual arts and literature. She made several forays into documentary filmmaking before directing her first feature film, Rechercher Victor Pellerin (2006), which plays with the codes of documentary. Following its critical success and numerous screenings worldwide, Sophie Deraspe continued her work with her second feature film, Les signes vitaux (2009), which is equally steeped in realism. Since its international premiere in Rotterdam, the film has won 14 awards at about thirty international festivals and was a finalist for the Jutra Award for Best Film in Quebec. The year 2015 proved prolific for Sophie Deraspe as she opened the Les Rendez-vous Québec Cinéma with her fiction film Les Loups and premiered the documentary Le profil Amina at the Sundance Film Festival. With Antigone (2019), Deraspe adapted Sophocles' play, reinterpreting the myth through the story of a 16-year-old girl whose family immigrated to Canada after the tragic death of their parents. The film premiered at TIFF, where it won the award for Best Canadian Feature Film. In 2024, she received the same award for her latest film, Bergers.
