Following his studies in cinema at the Université de Montréal, Stéphane Thibault directed two mid-length documentaries, Les loups (1995) and Ne parlez jamais avec l'inconnu (1996). In 1998, he made Le beau Jacques which won numerous awards. In 2002, he directed Les justes (Claude Jutra Award at the Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois) and co-directed with Isabelle Lavigne Junior, a feature documentary (Best Canadian Feature Documentary, Hot Docs 2008). The duo also co-directed At Night, They Dance in 2010, selected at the Cannes Film Festival and winner of the special jury prize in the Canadian feature film category at the 2011 Hot Docs.
