Víctor Erice is a Spanish film director and screenwriter born in 1940 in Karrantza, Spain. He is renowned for his poetic and visually evocative works. Erice studied law and political science at the University of Madrid, then film direction at the Escuela Oficial de Cinematografía. In 1973, he directed his first feature film, The Spirit of the Beehive, which brought him considerable public and critical acclaim. A decade later, he directed El Sur, based on a novel by Adelaida García Morales, his wife at the time. In 1992, he directed Dream of Light in collaboration with painter Antonio Lopez-Garcia. The film was presented at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize and the International Critics' Prize (FIPRESCI). Since 2010, he has been working on a documentary series entitled Memoria y Sueño, evoking the filming locations of the great films of cinema history.
