Chady and David work on the transport boats of Lake Geneva. On the waters of the lake, the two men, haunted by the memories of their countries of origin, share confidences and the same feeling of uprooting. A strange intimacy develops between the two men. They then undertake an erratic stroll, through a space-time that may only exist in their dreams, but which at times resembles Switzerland.

Presented as a world premiere at the International Burning Lights Competition at Visions du Réel 2019, "Le Pays" could be presented as a total change of scenery. Lucien Monot, a talented young filmmaker who already has a Silver Leopard to his credit, offers with this essay a sublimation of reality. The two protagonists, uprooted, evolve in this territory and these landscapes as one would stroll in a hallucinatory vision, but always well in touch with reality. Shot in Super8, it is with delicacy and ingenuity that the film convokes its own surreal world and leaves us as pensive as its soldiers drifting away in the early morning.
