Helgi Piccinin is a Quebec independent filmmaker who has developed a unique and intimate approach to documentary cinema. Since 2005, his short and medium-length films have shown a profound sensitivity to the themes of identity and difference. Curious by nature and attuned to the poetry of the every day, he is driven by the desire to reveal unusual or uncharted universes. His work has been screened at many international festivals, and he has created several digital projects for museums, universities, and institutions. Drawing from his rich field experiences and film studies in Quebec and France, the director was initially inspired by his journeys throughout Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Later, he turned his camera to stories closer to home, set in Quebec City (Peace Only, In Saint-Sauveur Neighborhood, Roof Runners), Montreal (Of Insects and Men), and in the United States (Belief Disbelief). In 2020, Piccinin’s deeply personal first documentary feature Champions immerses its viewers in the world of his autistic brother. In 2023, he continues with the documentary Amour et différence (Love and Difference), a sensitive exploration of the meaning of love and sexuality for people with disabilities.
