Karim Sayad was born in Lausanne in 1984 to an Algerian father and a Swiss mother. After earning a master's degree in international relations from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, he became interested in documentary filmmaking. His first short film, Babor Casanova, won the Youth Student Prize at Clermont-Ferrand. His debut feature, Of Sheep and Men (2016), was selected for numerous international festivals. In 2019, he directed his second feature film, My English Cousin, a documentary about an Algerian man who migrated to England and regrets leaving his homeland. In 2023, he directed 2G, which follows four former smugglers struggling to make a living after the Nigerien government banned the transport of illegal migrants.
