Mary Kunuk lives and works in Igloolik, Nunavut. She is a member of the Inuit collective Arnait Video Production, the Igoolik Women's Video Collective, founded in 1991 to promote the unique culture of Inuit women by encouraging discussion with Canadians of all backgrounds. She has been making videos since 1993. Many of her works are the result of a collaborative process with her community, her family or other video artists, including Marie-Hélène Cousineau. Her videos are now shown all over the world. She directed Aqtuqsi (My Nightmare) in 1996. An aqtuqsi is a dream from which one must wake up, a nightmare that can paralyze the person who sleeps.
Rooted in tradition, adoption is a reality that all Inuit families have experienced. In Inuit culture, adopting a child from a relative, friend or acquaintance is a common practice. This documentary explores Inuit family relations through the personal histories of women who have experienced adoption in one way or another.
