The Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle is an area of the Atlantic Ocean where legend has it, many ships and planes have mysteriously disappeared. With irresistible humor, director Alice Gaboury-Moreau portrays a Montreal neighborhood that is sort of a local equivalent of this famous triangle: the area formed by the intersection of Mont-Royal and Saint-Denis streets, renowned for its nightlife. In a lively and confident tone, in a casual pop style, the Concordia University graduate evokes the main bars of the neighborhood and describes their particularities (including the ATM to withdraw money from when one’s wallet is empty). She inserts delightful oral testimonies collected from the people around her, which are then contrasted with drawings. In this Bermuda Triangle, the partygoers don't disappear, but instead, rush off to parties that end in the wee hours of the night. I discovered this film at the beginning of 2022, when the pandemic restrictions were still in effect, and it nostalgically brought back memories of the jubilant pleasures of the pre-COVID-19 nightlife in Montreal's bars, without masks or social distancing...
