The Velvet Queen

Poster image The Velvet Queen

In the heart of the high Tibetan plateaux, among unexplored and inaccessible valleys, lies one of the last sanctuaries of the wild world, home to rare and unknown species of fauna. Photographer Vincent Munier takes writer and adventurer Sylvain Tesson on a quest to catch a glimpse of the snow leopard, one of the rarest and most difficult big cats to approach. Over a period of several weeks, he teaches him the delicate art of stalking, how to read tracks and the patience needed to catch a glimpse of the creatures. Travelling to the summits inhabited by invisible presences, the two men engage in a dialogue about our place among living beings and celebrate the beauty of the world.

A film made of exceptions: animals so rarely observed and filmed, living in the wild and remote regions of Tibet. Magnificent and unusual landscapes filmed and photographed with art. It's like being in a dream, hypnotized.

The slowness, the occasional sound of the wind, the silence, punctuated here and there by music echoing our fascination. In this vast and seemingly deserted space, humans wait for the creatures without always seeing them, and the intrigued creatures gaze back at the humans...

Endurance, submission to harsh conditions, and the infinite patience of two men and a woman, on the lookout for an almost mythical beast. They have all the time to reflect on the world and themselves, and so do we.

Turn off your phone, sink into cushions, and you're in for a 90-minute break from our noisy and chaotic world. A journey full of surprises and wonder until the very end.

I had the chance to see this film on the big screen and to watch it again on my computer, and I was surprised to find that even on a small screen, the images remain breathtaking, the magic is intact.
