From the very first scenes of this film, we fall under the spell of Elayna Einish, brilliant in the role of Ethel, a vampire whose wisdom far exceeds the years suggested by her face. Einish’s horror mockumentary tackles the serious subject of extractive and colonial capitalism with a light touch. With a brilliant sense of comic timing and a meticulous use of low-budget resources, the film blends cinematic languages to tell a compelling story of Indigenous resurgence. Humor and terror don’t cancel each other out—they are both essential to this portrait of Indigenous resurgence and to Einish’s standout performance, which fully captures the vampire’s main-character energy. “I did it once, and I will do it again,” Ethel declares with insouciant confidence: we believe her, and we want more. A brilliant sense of comic timing, careful use of modest means to create powerful images, and a mash-up of cinematic languages combine to tell this story with clarity, urgency, and utterly irresistible charm. We can’t wait to see what Einish does next!
