I'll Come To You With Deaf Eyes

Poster image I'll Come To You With Deaf Eyes

This film is a letter to my friend Vincent who died ten years ago. Vincent was Deaf. He introduced me to his language, his culture, his world. Through Vincent's life, the film examines the roots of the distress that plagues the Deaf, and also explore a rich and fascinating world, a people that struggles to preserve its language and culture.

As with each of her films, Laetitia Carton starts from the intimate, talks about her history. In this first-person diary, she talks to her Deaf friends and tells us about the years she spent with them. A path strewn with pitfalls, grief, anger and struggles. Because the people who do not hear are not necessarily the ones we think. By successive touches, we discover this fight for a language, base of a minority culture denigrated or even denied by the hearing society. "I am a stranger in my own country" confides a young Deaf man who is prevented from learning sign language. From then on, approaching this "country of the Deaf" becomes as much a poetic gesture as one of emancipation. A film in the form of a bridge to this invisible people who have so many things to say and to teach us.
