Dominic Gagnon is a filmmaker and artist, born in 1974 in Rimouski, Québec. Working at the intersection of documentary and experimental film, he creates period portraits by delving into amateur videos found online. He gained recognition with a trilogy (RIP in Pieces America, Pieces and Love All to Hell, and Big Kiss Goodnight) made between 2009 and 2012. He has also carried out numerous performances and interventions with the collective Au travail / At Work. Since then, he has continued to develop a documentary practice based on unconventional footage sourced from the Web: Hoax Canular (2013), Of the North (2015), Going South (2018), Big in China, Georges and the Vision Machines, and Space Down (2024). His works explore contemporary mythologies, marginal forms of moving-image production and their censorship, and the conditions of mediation between the artwork and the viewer. His work has been acclaimed both in Québec and internationally, and has been the subject of several retrospectives.
A team of astronauts is launched into space during the pandemic. As the planet takes a pause, its inhabitants share their experiences of COVID-19 and the consequences it might have on their mental health.
« Je regardais des vidéos sur Internet et j'ai remarqué que certaines de ces séquences étaient progressivement supprimées en raison de leur contenu contestataire. Comme elles disparaissaient, j'ai commencé à les récupérer pour les sauver de l'oubli et en faire un montage. En préservant et en diffusant leur message, je réalise en quelque sorte le vœu de ces auteurs anonymes. » (D.G.)
