The Silence of the Banana Trees

Poster image The Silence of the Banana Trees

Mihály has filled his house in a leafy suburb of Budapest with art works made by his daughter Réka to whom he hasn’t spoken in years. The distance is even more difficult because she suffers from a dreadful illness. The film acts as a go-between in an attempt to unite the father and his daughter, who lives in Amsterdam.

Mihaly invited Eneos Çarka into his home. A place cut off from the world by trees, it houses a unique universe—one that Mihaly has built for himself. Through the filmmaker’s perspective, this house comes to life. The wind, the colors, the texture—it vibrates, it lives behind the family slides. Through the works of his daughter, but also the plants and flying leaves, we absorb the familial bonds that haunt, sometimes tenderly, the homes we inhabit. Mihaly’s solitude becomes all the more palpable because it hasn’t always been this way. The film doesn’t tell us why his daughter distanced herself, but it allows us to grasp something of their connection.
