Landscape in the Mind's Eye

Poster image Landscape in the Mind's Eye

Through the eyes of children and women from different generations, this film reveals the soul of a small village on Quebec’s North Shore. Madame Kennedy shares a vital bond with the forest; Diane, faced with the hardships of her life’s journey, lifts her head high; Cathy, at 18, possesses the biting clarity of those who have had to fight. The strength and determination of each woman converge in Guylaine, the young soprano who, throughout the film, plays, sings, and breathes a contagious joy for life.

1995. The small village of Sainte-Anne-de-Portneuf on Quebec’s North Shore. Time stands still, time stretches; dream and reality brush against one another. Women from different generations share their stories with us—their bond to the land, their past, present, and future.

Lucie Lambert offers a rare film that moves almost imperceptibly between lightness and gravity. With honesty, intuition, and humility, Lambert documents not only the visible world and the women of her native region, but also weaves a cinematic universe interlacing dreams and memories.

A microcosm. A whisper. A fogged-up window. A painful memory. The shoreline in the mist. A reassuring caress.
