For four years Éric Baudelaire regularly met with students from the film group at Dora Maar middle school in Saint-Denis. Time for them to grow together, time to find the form of a film in which they would be the true subjects: its characters, its authors and its promise.

What is cinema? Truth at 24 frames per second. Images that bear witness to the material world. Editing that reflects an immaterial world. Sounds…or noises, connected to the real or floating in their own dimension. A curious alchemy that takes all this materiality—these waves and pixels—and gives it life, vibrating with its own energy. A deep breath of cinema, cinema’s lungs. And sometimes, miracles happen. Sitting in front of this Other, this construction filled with irregularities, the audience forgets their own bodies, forgets their lives, lets themselves be swallowed down and manhandled, lets themselves take flight. A true act of communication: something is speaking to us. A Dramatic Film, coming as it does from a cinematic world stripped of all didacticism, all fashion, all grammar lessons, brings us into a rediscovery of the 7th art and all its potential. What a joyful dream: film is not dead, long live film!
