"This story takes place in ancient times, times of violence. All across Europe a kind of war was spreading. In one town were two girls living..."

Twin towers in Bagnolet, each pointing to a cardinal direction; two young women from the edges of Europe. Through these twin figures, Virgil Vernier blurs the line between fiction and documentary. He explores a territory that is both real and imaginary: the margins of our time. Mercuriales is as much a dreamlike tale as it is a documentary chronicle—a visual meditation. Gods and myths of a crisis-ridden era appear throughout. Over these skyscrapers, symbols of the all-powerful 20th century, looms a threat: that of collapse and emptiness. Yet amidst the chaos, what remains is the power of embodiment. Bodies and buildings are filmed with the same intensity. The magnetism is palpable.
