Budapest Silo

Poster image Budapest Silo

József works at the largest still-operational grain silo in Budapest. He has been doing this job for over 30 years and lives in a container home next to the structure, where trucks and trains rumble past his window. When he is lowered into the ten-story-deep silos to clean them, he looks like a scuba diver at work. It’s dangerous work for József, especially because he has been exposed to crop dust for many years now. The growing threat to his health could even lead to his death. Yet he can’t escape it; in fact, he seems to have become an integral part of his environment.

In this visually stunning documentary Zsófia Paczolay captures the dangerous work of Josef at a large Silo factory in Budapest. With almost no dialogue and a well-designed sound scape, the viewer is introduced into the hardship of Josef's life. His body is both part of the Silo as it is endangered by it. The images light and sound design reveal a portrait of a man through a filmmaker's gaze. The viewer experiences his life through the aesthetic camera and attention to light that allows us a poetic interpretation of his character. In this portrait of a man and his dangerous work, we see the essence of his truth interpreted. The result is deeply moving and cinematically beautiful. One of the first images that appears is difficult to interpret. It is one that resembles a human cell. A strange black line enters the center of a lit surface, only later at the end of the film we realize that this is Josef at the center of the Silo, descending into the depths, into the world that he breaths and can't escape. The understanding of the image, the beauty of its reveal and length form a cyclical and mesmerizingly structured film that is both the hero's dream as well as his fate.
