Abbas Fahdel is a Franco-Iraqi film director, screenwriter, and critic, born in Hilla, Iraq. He moved to France at the age of 18, where he studied cinema under Eric Rohmer, Jean Rouch, and Serge Daney until he obtained his doctorate. In January 2002, he returned to Iraq, where he shot the documentary Back to Babylone. In 2008, he completed his first feature-length fiction film, Dawn of the World, shot in Egypt. In 2015, he returned to documentary filmmaking with the monumental Homeland: Iraq Year Zero, for which he won numerous festival awards. In 2018, his new feature film, Yara, shot in Lebanon, was selected for the international competition at the Locarno International Film Festival.
