Anna Hints is an Estonian filmmaker also active in contemporary art and experimental folk music. She divides her time between the very special culture of southern Estonia and India. As an active dumpster diver, her short documentary For Tomorrow Paradise Arrives (2021) sparked public debate and contributed strongly to the growth of grassroots movements against food waste in Estonia. Her short fiction film Weight of Light (2024) depicts the lives of Delhi's rag-pickers. She is currently pursuing a master's degree at the Estonian Academy of Music and Drama's drama department. She is also a vocalist in the electronic music trio Eeter, which collaborated with Icelandic composer Edvard Egilsson on the original score for Smoke Sauna Sisterhood (2023), her first feature-length documentary. The film was selected for over 70 festivals worldwide, and enjoyed a theatrical release in over 32 countries. Photo © Les Arcs Films Festival / Alexandra Fleurantin
In the intimacy of Estonia's sacred saunas, ancient hymns to nature, birth and death are sung, and all the rituals of life intersect. Here, women tell stories they wouldn't tell anywhere else, and in the smoke of burning stones, the female condition is revealed in all its violence and power.
