Arnis Kalniņš began his career as a director and DOP while studying sociology. He created a documentary about social conditions in Riga titled Places of Recreation (2010). His interest in documentary filmmaking continued with The Invisible Nature of Light (2011), which focused on the work of renowned Latvian artist Gints Gabrāns. While attending the National Film School of Latvia, Arnis’s second-year project was a documentary about the life and work of his father, The Observer (2025). He continues to explore this subject in his graduation film, The Informant, a hybrid documentary that examines his father’s conflicts with the KGB in the 1970s.
