Avi Mograbi was born in 1956 in Tel Aviv. Born into a Zionist family, he soon distanced himself from their traditions. After studying Art, and Philosophy at Tel Aviv University, he made his first short, Deportation, in 1989. In 1997, his first feature How I Learned to Overcome my Fear and Love Arik Sharon was a savage critique of Israel’s right wing politics. All of his work is marked by his uncompromising and anti-Zionist political convictions: “I wholeheartedly support the existence of the State of Israel, but I esteem that it should no longer be a Jewish state but a state for all its citizens as equals." Through his films, he relentlessly challenges not only the founding myths of his country but its present too. As well as being a politically committed filmmaker, he also tirelessly experiments with cinematographic language, playing with it, inventing forms, staging himself–simultaneously director, actor, cinematographer, producer and screenwriter. His movies have received acclaim all over the world, and have been screened at the biggest international festivals including Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Rome, New York and the Cinéma du Réel in Paris.
