Carlos Ferrand
Carlos Ferrand was born in Lima, Peru, in 1946. From Lima to Brussels, via Paris and Vermont, his years of wandering placed cinema at the centre of his journey. After studying at Brussels’ National Institute of Cinematographic Studies in the late 1960s, Ferrand returned to Peru in 1970, where he worked for organizations seeking to raise awareness of agrarian reform. There, he documented land occupations and the emergence of Villa El Salvador, a revolutionary model of self-governance and social justice. Carlos Ferrand moved to Quebec in 1980. A versatile filmmaker, he has worked across directing, writing, cinematography, documentary, and fiction. Over a career spanning nearly fifty years, he has directed around forty films and videos, including Cimarrones (1982), Cuervo (1989), Visionnaires (1998), Il parle avec les loups (2002), Casa Loma, journal de bord (2002), Americano (2007), 13, un ludodrame sur Walter Benjamin (2018), Jongué, carnet nomade (2019), and L’aventurine (2026). He has also worked as a cinematographer on more than fifty productions. He works and lives in Montreal with his family.
