Born in 1962, François Miron is a Quebec filmmaker specializing in experimental cinema. In 1980, he received an MFA in filmmaking from The School of The Art Institute Of Chicago, where he went under a full merit scholarship. He began making films in 1982, working exclusively with film emulsion. His early works were experimental animated short films, all created using a highly effective image-manipulation technique that became his specialty: optical printing. His films have screened at festivals and events around the world, earning numerous awards and recognition within the underground film community. Since 1993, he has taught optical printing, filmmaking, and the technical aspects of cinema at the Mel Oppenheim School of Cinema in Montreal. In 2007, he completed production on The 4th Life, a feature film shot on 35 mm and co-written with James Galwey, which received international theatrical and festival releases. In 2008, he won a Juno Award for his photographic and cinematic work with the band Arcade Fire. That same year, he received the Prix à la création artistique from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec for his dance film Hymn to Pan. In 2015, he directed Paul Sharits, a feature-length documentary about the legendary experimental filmmaker and avant-garde artist.
