Ginny Stikeman is a Canadian filmmaker, director, producer, and editor best known for her documentary work at the National Film Board of Canada, where she spent 30 years and headed the women’s unit, Studio D, from 1990 until its closure in 1996. Born in Ottawa and raised in Montreal, she earned a BA in English and French from McGill University before joining the NFB in 1968, later becoming a key creative force at Studio D as an editor, producer, and executive producer. Her notable projects include Forbidden Love: The Unashamed Stories of Lesbian Lives, Sisters in the Struggle, and Older, Stronger, and Wiser, and she contributed as an editor to award-winning films such as the Academy Award–winning I’ll Find a Way and the BAFTA-winning Cree Hunters of Mistassini. After retiring, Stikeman became actively involved with Montreal’s Blue Metropolis literary festival and established the Metropolis Azul Prize, continuing her legacy of cultural advocacy and a strong commitment to film activism and increasing diversity in filmmaking.
