Lina Soualem is a director and actress born and based in Paris. After studying history and political science at the Sorbonne, she began working in journalism and eventually turned to film, seeking to combine her interests in the seventh art and the study of contemporary Arab societies. She has worked as a programmer for the International Human Rights Film Festival in Buenos Aires, Argentina and the Palest'In & Out festival in Paris. Her first feature-length documentary Leur Algérie was selected as a world premiere at Visions du Réel 2020 and has won awards in numerous festivals. As an actress, Lina has acted in feature films by directors Hafsia Herzi, Hiam Abbass, Rayhana and Rima Samman. Today, she is developing her second feature documentary project Bye Bye Tiberias and works as a writer and writing coordinator on fiction and documentary projects.
Leaving her native village to follow her dream of becoming an actress, Hiam Abbass also left behind her mother, grandmother and seven sisters. Thirty years later, her filmmaker daughter Lina returns with her to journey through the vanished places among the scattered memories of four generations of daring Palestinian women.
After 62 years of living together, Lina’s grandparents, Aïcha and Mabrouk, have decided to separate. Together, they came from Algeria to Thiers, a small medieval town in the middle of France, over 60 years ago. Side by side, they have experienced this chaotic immigrant life. For Lina, their separation is an opportunity to question their long journey of exile and their silence.
