Formerly a journalist, Lucas Roxo gradually turned to documentary filmmaking. Interested in issues related to memory, identity, and representation, his work is marked by immersion in places deeply affected by these themes, both in France and abroad. His style ranges from a classic formal approach to a more experimental aesthetic, particularly by playing with the contrast between image and sound. His work often features participatory methods. In 2013, his first film, La marche d’après, revisits the 30th anniversary of the 1983 March for Equality and Against Racism. In 2016, he was awarded a residency with “Labo d’un premier doc” by Périphérie and G.R.E.C., which led to his first creative short film, Sinto a tua falta, telling the story of his grandmother’s exile from Portugal to France during the Salazar dictatorship. Deeply interested in participatory cinema, he experimented with collective filmmaking in 2018, supporting a group of Roubaix residents in creating a film about the future of their neighborhood, threatened by an urban renewal project: Pile, permis de démolir. He continued in 2019 with Regarde-nous, a film exploring youth representation and their relationship to media and social networks.
