Born in 1963 in Versailles into a family of musicians, Michel Gondry is a filmmaker and artist recognized for his visual inventiveness, his love of stop motion animation, and his universe, which is at once whimsical, dreamlike, and playful. He has created acclaimed fiction films such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) and Mood Indigo (2013), iconic music videos for Björk and The White Stripes, as well as notable commercials. He has also explored documentary filmmaking, notably with the family-centered The Thorn in the Heart (2009), a portrait of his aunt who was a schoolteacher; Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy? (2013), where he engages in conversation with the American linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky; and Maya, Give Me a Title, a hybrid work composed of a collage of short films he had been making for years for his daughter Maya.
