Born in Chile, Patricio Henríquez settled in Montreal in 1974 following the overthrow of Salvador Allende’s socialist government. From 1980 to 1993, he worked at Radio-Québec, producing dozens of programs for Nord-Sud. He subsequently founded his own production company, Macumba International, and, in the late 1990s, directed September 11th, 1973 - The Last Stand of Salvador Allende and Images of a Dictatorship, both of which received numerous awards. Patricio Henríquez’s documentary practice is defined by politically engaged filmmaking, rigorous investigative work, and a commitment to defending human rights. His filmography includes Disobey (opening film of the 2005 RIDM), The Dark Side of the White Lady (“Regards sur le crime” Award at Visions du réel in 2007), Under the Hood: A Journey to the End of Torture (Jutra Award for Best Documentary in 2009), You Don’t Like the Truth: 4 Days Inside Guantanamo, co-directed with Luc Côté (IDFA Special Jury Award in 2010), Uyghurs, Prisoners of the Absurd (Iris Award for Best Documentary in 2016), Mon insécurité nationale, le Canada contre Victor Regalado (selected for the 2014 RIDM), and Waiting for Raif (2022) also co-directed with Luc Côté. Between 2007 and 2022, Patricio Henríquez was a documentary filmmaking instructor at L’inis. From 2005 to 2011, he was also a visiting professor at the Documentary Chair of the International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños (EICTV) in Cuba.
