Richard Desjardins is a singer-songwriter and documentary filmmaker born in 1948 in Rouyn, Quebec. He has been listed in the Larousse dictionary since 2006 under the following description: "As a poet and pamphleteer expressing himself in a language without taboos, he is one of the most original creators of today's Quebec music." In addition to his brilliant career as a musician, he develops a documentary work with his sidekick Robert Monderie. In 1999, after two other films ( A Raging Disaster and Firefly), they directed a shock documentary on the state of Quebec's forests, Forest Alert, which highlights the poor management of this resource long considered "inexhaustible". In 2007, the duo presents The Invisible Nation, which relates the story of the Algonquin nation of Quebec and denounces its current living conditions. In 2011, they filmed The Hole Story, about the mining industry.
While silence and ignorance reign supreme over our forests—and despite official assurances that our forest heritage will remain untouched—this hard-hitting documentary raises the question of our collective responsibility in the face of the destruction of a truly unique environment. The boreal forest, that immense wealth once thought inexhaustible—can we really say it’s in good hands?
In this feature documentary, Richard Desjardins and Robert Monderie continue in the same provocative vein as their earlier Forest Alert, this time turning their lens on Canada's mining industry. Using striking images, rare archival footage and interviews, The Hole Story analyzes company profits and the impact of mining on the environment and workers’ health.
