Robert Monderie is a Québec filmmaker, researcher and screenwriter born in Rouyn in 1948. He teamed up with Richard Desjardins in 1977 to shoot his first documentary, A Raging Disaster, a ruthless portrait of the town of Rouyn-Noranda. Afterwards, they filmed Firefly (1983) on the peregrinations of a Metis musician recently released from prison. For 15 years, Monderie teaches photography and cinema, while working at the NFB and Radio-Québec. In 1999, he co-directed with Richard Desjardins the widely acclaimed film Forest Alert. Robert Monderie directed La loi de l'eau (2001), co-written with Richard Desjardins and narrated by Julien Poulin. He then co-directed - again with Richard Desjardins - The Invisible Nation (2007) which chronicles the life of the Algonquins deprived from their land and cut off from their culture, and The Hole Story (2011) which relates the exploitation of resources by mining companies.
While silence and ignorance reign supreme over our forests—and despite official assurances that our forest heritage will remain untouched—this hard-hitting documentary raises the question of our collective responsibility in the face of the destruction of a truly unique environment. The boreal forest, that immense wealth once thought inexhaustible—can we really say it’s in good hands?
In this feature documentary, Richard Desjardins and Robert Monderie continue in the same provocative vein as their earlier Forest Alert, this time turning their lens on Canada's mining industry. Using striking images, rare archival footage and interviews, The Hole Story analyzes company profits and the impact of mining on the environment and workers’ health.
